Racegoers may have heard the sound of a bell ringing in the parade ring to let jockeys know that it is time to mount their horses.
The bell itself is mounted on a wooden plaque and affixed to one of the trees in the parade ring. It is the old warning bell from our stables, which has been repurposed with the help of a beautiful bell rope from St John’s Church in Sharow.
In this picture you can see Bridget Taylor-Connor from St John’s Bell Restoration Project and Head Groundsman Carl Tonks giving the bell a test go!
St John’s, Sharow have a Bell Tower Restoration group that you can join on Facebook and there is also a Just Giving page where you can donate to the restoration appeal. https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/appealforapeal.
